Negotiators are getting closer to Iran deal, says Donald Trump

Washington (Web Desk): US President Donald Trump on Saturday said on Saturday that US and Iranian negotiators were making significant headway and were “getting ‌a lot closer” to sealing an agreement aimed at ending the conflict, according to an interview with CBS News.

He added that any final understanding would block Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons and would guarantee that its uranium enrichment would be “satisfactorily handled”, as reported by CBS.

“I will only sign a deal where we get everything we want,” Trump was quoted as saying.
Iran, the United States, and mediator Pakistan each stated on the same day that negotiations had advanced in efforts to bring an end to nearly three months of fighting.

Trump has continued to shift between diplomatic engagement and the threat of military action since a ceasefire was put in place six weeks ago, intended to give both sides space to reach an agreement on Iran’s nuclear programme and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy corridor currently under Tehran’s control.

He previously indicated he was weighing the choice between reaching a deal with Iran or launching renewed strikes, while US Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested there was a possibility Tehran could agree to end the Middle East conflict as early as Saturday.

The remarks came as Pakistan’s Field Marshal Asim Munir arrived in Tehran to strengthen mediation efforts, while Trump unexpectedly cancelled attendance at his son’s wedding and remained in Washington due to “circumstances pertaining to government”, heightening speculation that discussions had entered a sensitive phase.

In comments to Axios, Trump described himself as “50-50” on whether to proceed with an agreement or resume military action, saying he would likely make a decision by Sunday on whether to restart hostilities.

Trump said it was a "solid 50/50" as to whether he would be able to make a "good" deal or else "blow them to kingdom come".

He also confirmed he would meet Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner later in the day to review Iran’s latest response, with Vice President JD Vance also expected to take part.

“I think one of two things will happen: either I hit them harder than they have ever been hit, or we are going to sign a deal that is good,” Trump said.

He further noted that “some people would much rather have a deal and others would rather resume the war,” while dismissing claims that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was uneasy about the negotiations.
