Rawal Dam spillways opened as water level rises after heavy rains

Islamabad (Web Desk): Persistent rains have caused the water level at Rawal Dam to surge dangerously, compelling authorities to open its spillways in a bid to prevent overflow. The Islamabad Capital Territory administration confirmed that the water height reached 1,750 feet on Tuesday after prolonged rainfall in the capital and nearby regions.

To manage the rising waters, the district administration promptly authorized the opening of the dam’s spillways. This controlled discharge is being carefully supervised to maintain safety, with Assistant Commissioner Nilore personally overseeing the operation. Officials anticipate the release to continue for approximately five hours.

Before initiating the spillways, all safety measures were thoroughly observed to minimize any risk to communities downstream.

Emergency response units, including rescue teams, ambulances, and police forces, have been strategically positioned at bridges and vulnerable locations along the water’s path.

The spokesman for the administration explained that the spillway gates will remain open until the water level falls to 1,746 feet, a margin deemed safer for both the dam’s integrity and the nearby population.

This action aims to avert structural damage to the dam and to reduce the likelihood of flooding in adjacent neighbourhoods.

Residents living close to streams and flood-prone zones have been urged to stay vigilant and adhere to safety guidelines issued by officials.
