Pakistan condemns illegal detention, mistreatment of Global Sumud Flotilla activists by Israeli occupying forces

Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan on Thursday strongly condemned the interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israeli occupation forces in international waters well as the arbitrary detention and alleged mistreatment of humanitarian personnel onboard.

“The Government of Pakistan condemns in the strongest possible terms the unlawful interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israeli occupying forces in the international waters as well as arbitrary detention and reported mistreatment of humanitarian workers onboard,” Foreign Office (FO) spokesperson Tahir Andrabi said in a statement.

He stated that Pakistani humanitarian worker Saad Edhi was reportedly among those taken into custody, adding that the Foreign Ministry was pursuing efforts through Pakistan’s mission in Jordan to secure his release.

Andrabi said the ministry was also in continuous coordination with Pakistan’s diplomatic missions in the region to ensure the safe repatriation of any Pakistani nationals who may have been detained.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s call for the immediate release of all activists being held and urged the international community to safeguard the security, dignity and basic rights of the detainees.

The FO spokesperson further said that on May 19, the foreign ministers of Pakistan, Türkiye, Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Jordan, Libya, Maldives and Spain had issued a joint statement denouncing the renewed Israeli actions against the Global Sumud Flotilla, describing it as a peaceful civilian humanitarian mission intended to highlight the devastating humanitarian crisis faced by the Palestinian people.

The ministers had also demanded the immediate release of all detained activists and stressed the need to fully respect their rights and dignity.
