PM Shehbaz hails UN support for Pakistan during farewell call by Mohamed Yahya

Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday received United Nations Resident Coordinator and Humanitarian Coordinator in Pakistan Mohamed Yahya for a farewell meeting, acknowledging his efforts to deepen cooperation between Pakistan and the UN during his tenure.

According to a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Office Media Wing, the premier appreciated Yahya’s contribution to strengthening the partnership between Pakistan and the UN and commended the UN Country Team for its consistent assistance in advancing the country’s development and humanitarian objectives.

He particularly highlighted cooperation in areas including climate resilience, sustainable development and disaster management.

PM Shehbaz also recalled the UN’ efforts to rally global assistance for Pakistan, especially in the aftermath of the devastating floods of 2022.

The prime minister congratulated Mohamed Yahya on his appointment as Assistant Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Deputy Emergency Relief Coordinator at the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).

He said the new responsibility reflected the recognition of Yahya’s extensive experience and dedication to humanitarian work.

PM Shehbaz extended his best wishes to Yahya for his new role and expressed hope that the longstanding and close relationship between Pakistan and the United Nations would continue to expand in the future.

Mohamed Yahya thanked the prime minister for his appreciation and acknowledged the cooperation and support provided by the Government of Pakistan to him and the UN Country Team throughout his assignment.

He reiterated that the UN would remain committed to assisting Pakistan in meeting its development and humanitarian needs.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister Syed Tariq Fatemi and other senior officials attended the meeting.
