Asia Cup 2025: Sri Lanka defeat Afghanistan by 6 wickets

Abu Dhabi (Web Desk): Sri Lanka secured their place in the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup T20 2025 by defeating Afghanistan by 6 wickets in the 11th match of the tournament, while Afghanistan’s campaign came to an end.

From Group B, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh have qualified for the next phase.

The crucial Group B match was played in Abu Dhabi, where Afghanistan’s captain Rashid Khan won the toss and opted to bat first. Afghanistan scored 169 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 20 overs.

In response, Sri Lanka comfortably chased the target of 170 runs by reaching it in the 19th over with 4 wickets down. Kusal Mendis was the top scorer for Sri Lanka with 74 runs, while Chamindu Mendis contributed 26 runs.

Earlier, Afghanistan’s experienced all-rounder Mohammad Nabi played a blazing innings, hitting 6 sixes and 3 fours to score 60 runs.

At the end of the 19th over, Afghanistan was at 137 runs for 7 wickets, but Mohammad Nabi attacked Dhananjaya de Silva in the last over, hitting five sixes and adding 32 runs to take the total to 169.

Rashid Khan and Ibrahim Zadran scored 24 runs each for Afghanistan, while Sri Lankan bowler Nuwan Thushara took 4 wickets.
