OpenAI introduces new safety rules for ChatGPT users under 18

California (Web Desk): OpenAI, the renowned artificial intelligence company, has announced new safety regulations for users under the age of 18 on its chatbot, ChatGPT.

According to technology websites, OpenAI will implement measures to make ChatGPT safer for younger users. The system will estimate the user’s age, and if it detects that the user is under 18, it will switch them to a version of the chatbot that engages only in less sensitive topics.

Under the new rules, sexual or flirtatious conversations will be prohibited for underage users.

If a young user expresses thoughts related to suicide or emotional distress, ChatGPT will attempt to notify their parents or, in severe cases, alert local authorities.

Parents will also have the option to set blackout hours during which ChatGPT cannot be used by their children.

If ChatGPT is uncertain about a user’s age verification, it will automatically apply the stricter under-18 safety protocols.

OpenAI emphasized that young users require enhanced protection.

This move comes in response to incidents where young users faced mental health challenges or attempted suicide after interacting with ChatGPT. The company aims to ensure a safe environment for youth to use the platform, protecting them from inappropriate content or conversations.

OpenAI also announced that parental controls will be available by the end of this month.
