California (Web Desk): OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently warned users in a podcast that AI chatbots like ChatGPT do not offer legal confidentiality when used as a therapist for mental or emotional issues.
Altman explained that while people share personal matters with ChatGPT, there is currently no legal or policy framework to ensure the confidentiality of those conversations. He clarified that, unlike a doctor who is legally bound to keep patient information confidential, there is no such legal guarantee with ChatGPT.
He stressed that users should exercise extreme caution when it comes to protecting their private and sensitive information. Altman made it clear that ChatGPT and other AI platforms should not be considered a substitute for professional therapy or counseling, as their legal boundaries and privacy guarantees are unclear.
This warning comes at a time when there is an increasing use of AI tools worldwide to address mental health issues. Experts also advise users to thoroughly understand ChatGPT's privacy policy before sharing sensitive information and, if necessary, seek professional help.
