Govt warns against undue debates on foreign policy amid regional tensions

Islamabad (Web Desk): Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar has urged citizens and media users to exercise caution and responsibility when discussing foreign policy matters, considering the sensitive regional environment.

Addressing a press conference in Islamabad alongside Information Minister Ataullah Tarar and Minister of State for Interior Tallal Chaudry, he highlighted the need for careful reporting and prioritizing the country’s interests above all else.

Tarar reminded the public that while Article 19 of the Constitution guarantees freedom of expression, this freedom is subject to reasonable legal limits. He emphasized that it does not allow discussions that could damage Pakistan’s relations with friendly nations.

The minister further said that the right to speak freely should be exercised with respect to Pakistan’s security, defence, national unity, the dignity of Islam, and the country’s diplomatic relationships.

He pointed out that the region is currently facing complex challenges and Pakistan is actively working to ease tensions through prudent diplomacy and an assertive foreign policy.

Tarar urged citizens to keep both the Constitution and Pakistan’s diplomatic objectives in mind when voicing their opinions.

Referring to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent communications with regional leaders, Tarar mentioned that the premier decided to postpone his planned visit to Russia due to the prevailing regional circumstances.

Speaking on the occasion, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar urged journalists to present the state’s perspective and place national priorities above personal preferences.

Tarar praised the Foreign Office (FO) for its significant role during the current situation and cautioned that unwarranted commentary on social media regarding foreign policy could harm the country.

He reiterated that Pakistan maintains friendly and cooperative relations with regional neighbours and warned against creating sensational content or vlogs merely for attention.

The information minister said that attempts to generate views at the expense of accuracy or national interest are counterproductive and do not serve Pakistan’s cause.
