Punjab CM Maryam reviews preparedness for monsoon rains, flood response

Lahore (Web Desk): Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has warned that temperatures could rise significantly between July and September, with the mercury expected to touch as high as 52°C in some parts of the province.

She directed all relevant departments to remain fully prepared to deal with the upcoming monsoon season and any potential flooding.

Addressing a high-level meeting, the chief minister said climate change is a reality and requires timely and effective measures to minimize its impact.

She noted that above-normal rainfall is expected in several cities of Punjab during the monsoon, increasing the risk of urban flooding.

Maryam Nawaz said coordination among the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), and district administrations is being further strengthened. She added that the early warning system is being fully activated to ensure timely weather forecasts and emergency alerts.

She also said five districts are at high risk of extreme temperatures. Bottled drinking water is being supplied to areas facing water shortages, while arrangements for livestock feed and drinking water have also been completed. Trucks carrying essential supplies have already been dispatched to all divisions.

The chief minister urged the public to avoid bathing in rivers and canals, warning of possible flood-related dangers.

She said Rescue 1122 and other emergency services would remain on high alert and praised the department for its effective response during previous floods.

During the meeting, participants also discussed the tragic roof collapse at a tuition centre in Kahna.

Maryam Nawaz further announced a new facility under the "Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar" scheme, under which citizens will be eligible for interest-free loans of up to Rs1 million for house construction.

She said the loans would be repayable through affordable monthly installments of a few thousand rupees, and eligible residents from across Punjab would be able to apply for the programme.
