Earthquake tremors felt in Islamabad, AJK and northern areas

Islamabad (Web Desk): Residents of Islamabad and adjoining areas were gripped by fear after strong earthquake tremors jolted the region, prompting many to step outside in panic.

The national seismic centre said the quake registered a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale and occurred at a depth of 159 kilometres.

The shaking was felt across several parts of the country, including Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Swat, Malakand, Muzaffarabad, Gilgit, Skardu and Abbottabad, while tremors were also reported from Azad Kashmir and Indian-administered Kashmir.

At the same time, some international monitoring agencies assessed the earthquake at a slightly lower magnitude of 5.8 and traced its epicentre to the border area between Tajikistan and China.

In Xinjiang, located along the Tajikistan-China frontier, authorities likewise recorded the quake’s strength at 6.1.
