NDMA issues rain alert for several parts of Pakistan, warns of flooding and landslides in northern areas

Lahore (Web Desk): The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert forecasting rain, possible flooding, and landslides in various parts of the country over the next 12 to 24 hours.

According to the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC), thunderstorms accompanied by rainfall are expected in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Jammu and Kashmir. The authority also warned of potential glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and increased water flow in rivers and streams in northern regions.

NDMA stated that the current weather pattern is in line with earlier seasonal forecasts and continues to be closely monitored. Relevant federal, provincial, and district administrations are being kept informed to ensure timely preparedness and response measures.

The alert indicates that several districts in Punjab, including Rawalpindi, Murree, Attock, Chakwal, Sargodha, Sahiwal, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, and others, are likely to experience thunderstorms and rainfall.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, rain is expected in districts including Chitral, Dir, Swat, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Charsadda, Kohat, Bannu, and Dera Ismail Khan.

Similarly, rainfall is forecast in Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir, including Skardu, Hunza, Ghizer, Diamer, Neelum Valley, and Muzaffarabad.

In Balochistan, rain is expected in Zhob, Musakhel, Barkhan, Kohlu, and Dera Bugti.

NDMA further warned that between June 13 and 15, northern areas may face increased risks of GLOFs, landslides, and flooding in streams due to rising temperatures and glacier melt.

The authority cautioned that low-lying and vulnerable valleys could experience localised flooding, while heavy rainfall and glacier melt may disrupt traffic flow on major highways and link roads.

Key routes such as the Karakoram Highway, Skardu Road, Deosai Road, Naran Road, and Jaglot–Skardu Road may be affected due to possible landslides and road blockages.

NDMA has advised all relevant departments to remain on high alert and urged tourists and travelers to check weather and road conditions before travelling to northern regions.

The public has also been advised to stay updated through the official NDMA mobile application “Pak NDMA Disaster Alert” for timely information and safety guidance.
