Karachi (Web Desk): The 9th death anniversary of prominent philanthropist and humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi is being observed today (Tuesday).
Born on February 28, 1928, in Gujarat during the era of British India, Edhi's life would come to be defined by an unwavering commitment to humanity.
After migrating to Pakistan, he began his journey of service in 1951, setting into motion what would grow into one of the largest and most respected welfare movements in the world.
From humble beginnings, Edhi laid the foundation for a vast network of humanitarian aid. His efforts led to the creation of the world's largest volunteer-run ambulance service.
But his compassion did not stop there—he also established shelters for the homeless, orphanages for abandoned children, and homes for animals, ensuring care for every vulnerable life, human or otherwise. His work earned him admiration not only within Pakistan but across the globe.
Edhi’s tireless dedication was recognized through numerous honours. Among these were prestigious awards such as the Asian Nobel, the Lenin Peace Prize, and Pakistan's own Nishan-e-Imtiaz, each symbolizing the immense respect he commanded for his lifetime of service.
Though Edhi’s roots were in Pakistan, his reach extended far beyond. The Edhi Foundation provided aid in countries including Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Iran, Lebanon, Sri Lanka, Croatia, Indonesia, and the United States—wherever tragedy struck, help often followed in his name.
Abdul Sattar Edhi passed away on July 8, 2016, in Karachi at the age of 88. Yet, even in death, his legacy lives on.
His mission, driven by empathy and simplicity, continues through the Edhi Foundation and in the hearts of countless individuals inspired by his example.
On this day, his memory serves as a powerful reminder of how one life, guided by compassion, can bring profound change to the world.
