Cambodia nominates Trump for nobel peace prize

Phnom Penh (Web Desk): Cambodia has officially announced the nomination of U.S. President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize.

 Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet made the announcement Thursday night through a Facebook post, which included a letter he claims was sent to the Norwegian Nobel Committee.

In his post, Prime Minister Hun Manet praised Trump’s "extraordinary leadership," stating that his intervention played a crucial role in preventing a border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand. He wrote in the letter: "Trump's timely intervention averted a potentially devastating conflict, saved countless lives, and paved the way for peace."

According to Reuters, on July 26, President Trump had a telephone conversation with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia, which successfully ended one of the fiercest conflicts between the two countries in recent history.

This led to a ceasefire agreement being reached on July 28 in Malaysia, under which both nations agreed not to resume hostilities.

It’s important to note that during the five-day clash between Cambodia and Thailand, 43 people were killed, and over 300,000 individuals were displaced.

This nomination came shortly after Cambodia's Deputy Prime Minister expressed gratitude toward President Trump for reducing tariffs on Cambodia’s imports from 49% to 19%, which saved the country’s key garment industry.

Pakistan had also announced its intention to nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize for his role in resolving the conflict with India, while Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu mentioned last month that he had nominated Trump for the same honor.
