60th Defence and Martyrs Day: President, PM and services chiefs pay tribute to martyrs and their families

Islamabad (Web Desk): President Asif Ali Zardari, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and the services chiefs have said that Defence and Martyrs Day remains an inspiring chapter in Pakistan’s history.

In their separate messages on the occasion, they emphasized that “6th September is a day of valour, unity, and resolve.”

President Asif Ali Zardari, paying tribute to the sacrifices of the armed forces, reaffirmed the country’s unwavering commitment to its defence and sovereignty.

In his message, he described September 6 as a “glorious chapter” of Pakistan’s history. He offered rich tribute to the soldiers and resilient citizens who, with faith and courage, defended the borders, adding that the sacrifices of the 1965 war continue to guide future generations.

The President underscored the importance of this year’s Defence Day in the context of “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos” conducted in May 2025 against India.

He said, “Just as our courageous forces demonstrated extraordinary valor and dedication in 1965, our sons once again proved their unmatched bravery during this year’s operation.”

Commending the excellence and readiness of the armed forces across land, air, and sea, he declared Pakistan’s defence to be “impregnable,” founded on the resolve of the people and its military.

As the Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, Zardari reiterated his commitment to ensuring modernization of defence systems and highlighted the growing importance of countering hybrid threats including propaganda, disinformation, and psychological warfare.

“In today’s era, it is crucial to not only enhance our military might but also to strengthen our information and communication systems,” he remarked. He urged unity among all institutions and the youth to face challenges with resilience.

The President also reaffirmed Pakistan’s stance on Kashmir and Palestine. He called the Kashmir conflict the root cause of regional instability and demanded a solution according to UN resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. Strongly condemning Israeli actions in Palestine, he termed them genocide and demanded an independent Palestinian state with Al-Quds Al-Sharif as its capital.

“This is the only path to lasting peace in the Middle East,” he said. Concluding his message, he urged the nation to stand firm and united so that sacrifices of martyrs are honored and Pakistan remains strong and peaceful for future generations.

He also reminded the nation of the debt owed to the families of martyrs, saying, “The spirit of September will forever echo in the bravery of our armed forces and the resilience of our nation. No challenge can deter us from the path of dignity and sovereignty. Long live Pakistan’s armed forces. Pakistan Zindabad.”

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in his Defence and Martyrs Day message, saluted the armed forces and martyrs, renewing the resolve to protect sovereignty, counter threats, and work for national prosperity.

He said, “September 6 is etched in national history as a symbol of courage, unity, and resilience.” Reflecting on the 1965 war, the Prime Minister said the armed forces, with public support, had defeated aggression and showed Pakistan’s ability to defend its independence.

Shehbaz Sharif also referred to this year’s “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos, Marqa e Haq” and praised the Army, Navy, and Air Force under the command of General Syed Asim Munir for their professionalism.

He stressed that the martyrs’ sacrifices and veterans’ courage will inspire future generations. He further reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to peace but warned against ignoring “continuous Indian provocations and shifting regional dynamics.” He said the country will continue strengthening defence while eliminating foreign-backed terrorism and proxy warfare.

The prime minister acknowledged the successes of the armed forces and law enforcement agencies against terrorism, adding, “The nation stands firmly by their side until this mission is completed.”

Expressing solidarity with the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), he said their struggle for self-determination cannot be suppressed by force. He also denounced Israeli aggression in Palestine and urged the world to protect civilians and ensure humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Shehbaz Sharif stressed the importance of economic stability for national defence, urging unity above personal divisions to achieve prosperity.

He concluded by urging the nation to recommit to the principles of faith, unity, and discipline, saying, “On this Defence and Martyrs Day, let us renew our pledge to the timeless principles of faith, unity, and discipline as envisioned by Quaid-e-Azam, and work together for a secure, united, and prosperous Pakistan. Pakistan Armed Forces Zindabad, Pakistan Paindabad.”

The heads of the armed forces also paid tribute on the 60th Defence and Martyrs Day. In a statement, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Naveed Ashraf and Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu expressed respect for martyrs and their families.

They said, “September 6, 1965, epitomizes the unflinching resolve and unshakeable spirit of the Pakistani nation. On this historic day, our brave soldiers, with the support of nation, stood like an insurmountable wall against blatant aggression, thwarting the nefarious designs of an enemy far superior in arms and numbers. The feats of heroic valour and sacrifice left an indelible message on the sands of time, that a united nation can never be defeated.”

The statement noted that the courage of heroes continues to inspire and that their legacy will endure. It added that besides safeguarding the nation from external threats, the armed forces also assist citizens during natural calamities, including the ongoing floods, and will mark Defence Day with humility.

“Today, we reaffirm our pledge to uphold the sacred responsibility entrusted to us by the nation. Pakistan Armed Forces remain ever vigilant and prepared to defend the country against all kinds of threats. Any attempt to disrupt our hard-earned peace will be met with a befitting and decisive response. May Allah Almighty continue to bless Pakistan with peace, stability and strength.
