Azad Khan appointed as new police chief of Karachi

Karachi (Web Desk): In a significant overhaul of the Sindh police command, the provincial government has appointed Azad Khan as the new Additional Inspector General (AIG) of Police for Karachi.

Khan, who was previously heading the Counter Terrorism Department as Additional IG, has taken over the role after Javed Alam Odho assumed office as Sindh’s Inspector General of Police (IGP) on Thursday.

An official notification issued the same day announced that Additional IG Zulfiqar Larik has been shifted from the Special Branch to the Counter Terrorism Department.

As part of the wider reshuffle, Sharjeel Kharral has been posted as Additional IG Operations Sindh, while Iqbal Dara has been assigned additional charge of the same portfolio.

Further changes include the appointment of Parvaiz Chandio as Deputy Inspector General Establishment, and the posting of Faisal Abdullah Chachar as DIG Mirpurkhas.

In another important move, DIG Nasir Aftab has been entrusted with the additional responsibility of DIG Sukkur.

The extensive reshuffling of senior police officers followed the appointment of Javed Alam Odho as the provincial police chief.

A day earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah had met the newly appointed IGP and congratulated him on assuming the position.

During the meeting, the chief minister urged the police leadership to strengthen their campaign against street crime in Karachi, pointing out that rising crime directly erodes public trust and the feeling of safety among residents. He directed the new IGP to treat the maintenance of law and order across the province as a foremost priority.

The chief minister also emphasized that operations against criminal gangs in the katcha areas must continue relentlessly and without pause.

He once again stressed the importance of intensifying efforts to curb street crime in Karachi, noting its serious impact on citizens’ confidence and overall security.
