London (Web Desk): The United Kingdom (UK) on Friday officially left the European Union (EU) after 47 years of membership and more than three years after it voted to do so in a referendum.
Candlelit vigils were held in Scotland which voted to stay in the EU, while Brexiteers partied in London's Parliament Square.
Thousands of people waving Union Jack flags packed London’s Parliament Square to mark the moment of Brexit at 11 pm (2300 GMT) – midnight in Brussels.
UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson marked the historic moment with his team at his Downing Street office.
Britain becomes the first country to leave the 28-member bloc and does it alone for the first time since 1973.
PM Johnson has been supporting Brexit since the 2016 referendum vote to leave that triggered bitterness and division but he has promised to lead the country to a bright new future.
