Ukraine deal 'very close' but no full breakthrough yet, says US President Trump

Washington (Web Desk): US President Donald Trump has described his meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky as “remarkable,” noting significant progress on Ukraine’s peace plan while acknowledging that some critical issues remain unresolved.

Speaking to the media after the meeting, he said that both leaders had discussed multiple aspects of Ukraine’s 20-point peace agenda and were “very close” to agreement.

“We are very close, perhaps extremely close,” he said, while also recognizing that certain complex matters still require resolution.

President Zelensky hailed the meeting as a major step forward, stating that 90 percent of Ukraine’s peace plan has been completed and that US security guarantees are fully agreed upon.

However, the US president clarified that the guarantees are about 95 percent finalized, though he preferred not to delve into the details.

Trump also suggested that a trilateral meeting involving Ukraine, the US, and Russia could take place, adding that Russian President Vladimir Putin is supportive of such talks.

Trump revealed that he had a detailed two-hour and thirty-minute phone conversation with Putin, during which the Russian leader emphasized the importance of a trilateral discussion.

While discussing the peace plan, Trump noted that some issues remain unresolved, particularly concerning a free trade zone agreement in the Donbas region. He acknowledged that this matter is still pending but expressed hope that both sides would reach an agreement soon.

When asked about the most challenging issue yet to be resolved, Trump identified it as the question of territorial control—deciding who holds which land. He assured that further talks on the matter would continue in the coming months.

Trump emphasized that the time has come to bring the conflict to an end and offered to visit Ukraine once a peace agreement is finalized.

He also offered to visit and address the Ukrainian parliament, which Zelensky warmly welcomed, stating, “You will always be welcome.”
