PDMA alert: Severe thunderstorms, heavy downpours likely in Punjab

Lahore (Web Desk): The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) on Friday issued a monsoon alert as Punjab entered its ninth spell of seasonal rainfall.

A PDMA spokesperson stated that heavy rains are expected in the upper catchment areas of rivers, significantly increasing the possibility of flooding in the region.

According to the forecast, from August 29 to September 2, intense thunderstorms and heavy showers are likely to affect a majority of districts across Punjab.

Areas likely to be hit include Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Gujranwala, Lahore, Gujrat, and Sialkot. Additional rainfall is predicted in Narowal, Hafizabad, Mandi Bahauddin, Okara, Sahiwal, Kasur, Jhang, Sargodha, Mianwali, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, and Rajanpur.

Relief Commissioner Punjab, Nabil Javed, has instructed all divisional commissioners and deputy commissioners to maintain a state of high alert. He mentioned that district administrations have been mobilized as per the directives of the chief minister to prepare for possible emergencies.

The relief commissioner emphasized that the ongoing monsoon rains could lead to a critical flood situation, particularly in rivers and connected drainage systems.

Currently, the Chenab, Ravi, and Sutlej rivers are reported to be flowing at very high flood levels. The commissioner also warned that heavy rainfall may cause urban flooding by overwhelming nullahs and stormwater drains in major cities, urging deputy commissioners and field officers to remain present and active on the ground.

In response, relevant departments including Health, Irrigation, Communication and Works, Local Government, and Livestock have been alerted to ensure full preparedness for any emergencies.

Citizens are advised to stay cautious during this weather phase and avoid unnecessary travel. In case of any emergency, individuals can reach out to the PDMA via their helpline at 1129, the spokesperson added.
