PM Shehbaz reaffirms commitment to combat drug trafficking on international day

Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan's commitment to combating drug abuse and illicit trafficking, saying the government is strengthening national institutions, enhancing international cooperation and taking comprehensive measures to protect young people from the growing threat of narcotics.

In his message on the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the prime minister said Pakistan joins the global community in renewing its resolve to address one of the world's most serious social and public health challenges.

He said the observance serves as a reminder of the devastating human, social and economic impact of drug abuse and illegal trafficking, which continue to affect communities across the world.

Referring to this year's theme, "World Drug Problem: Persisting Issues, New Challenges, Innovative Responses," Shehbaz Sharif said it reflects the changing nature of the global drug problem and the need for modern, coordinated solutions.

The prime minister said Pakistan remains fully committed to tackling emerging narcotics-related threats, including new psychoactive substances, organised drug trafficking networks and the increasing availability of illegal drugs, particularly among young people.

He said the government is strengthening institutional coordination, improving the capacity of law enforcement agencies and expanding cooperation with international partners to dismantle transnational drug trafficking networks. He stressed that eliminating these illegal networks is essential for ensuring a safer and more secure society.

Shehbaz Sharif described protecting the younger generation from drug addiction as a national priority, adding that creating drug-free educational institutions is vital for safeguarding Pakistan's future.

He said the Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) continues to play a leading role in preventing drug trafficking, reducing drug demand, raising public awareness and providing treatment and rehabilitation services for individuals affected by addiction.

The prime minister said the government's strategy combines strict law enforcement with prevention, education, treatment and rehabilitation to effectively address the country's drug problem.

Paying tribute to ANF personnel who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty, he said their dedication and bravery remain a source of pride for the nation.

Shehbaz Sharif added that the government is further enhancing the capabilities of institutions involved in counter-narcotics efforts while working with provincial governments to expand awareness campaigns and prevention programmes in schools, colleges and universities.

He also highlighted Pakistan's commitment to strengthening international partnerships through intelligence sharing, joint operations and regional cooperation to combat cross-border drug trafficking.

The prime minister urged parents, teachers, educational institutions, community leaders, the media and young people to actively contribute to the fight against drug abuse, saying building a healthy, safe and drug-free society is a shared national responsibility.
