Pakistan, Bangladesh sign agreement to cooperate in combating drug trafficking

Dhaka (Web Desk): Pakistan and Bangladesh signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) focused on boosting mutual cooperation in the fight against drug smuggling and the growing issue of narcotics misuse, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Interior on Saturday.

The accord was signed in Dhaka Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Bangladesh’s Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed during high-level discussions between the two countries.

As part of the agreement, both nations committed to working together to stop the illegal movement and distribution of drugs.

The ministers also decided to form a joint working group at the secretary level involving the interior ministries of Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The two sides agreed to launch coordinated initiatives to curb the increasing spread of narcotics and reduce the harmful consequences of drug abuse within society.

They also discussed preparing a common strategy aimed at preventing the unlawful sale of drugs and disrupting trafficking routes and supply chains.

Under the understanding, the concerned agencies from both countries will regularly exchange intelligence and information related to drug traffickers and criminal networks.

Pakistan and Bangladesh will additionally cooperate through the sharing of advanced technology, professional expertise and training programs for personnel engaged in anti-narcotics operations.

During the meeting, Mohsin Naqvi assured Bangladesh of Pakistan’s complete support regarding the Safe City Project, saying Islamabad was prepared to assist the Bangladeshi government in every possible area connected to the initiative.

The two ministers further agreed to broaden collaboration in internal security matters and training programs for civil armed forces. They also held talks on joint efforts to fight terrorism.

Detailed discussions were also conducted on improving mutual cooperation against cybercrime, organised criminal activities and financial fraud. Both sides additionally explored opportunities for collaboration in police academy training programs for officers.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi invited his Bangladeshi counterpart to visit Pakistan. Bangladeshi home thanked him for offering cooperation on the Safe City project.
