T20 World Cup 2026: Sri Lanka win toss, opt to field first against New Zealand 

Colombo (Web Desk): Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to field first against New Zealand in their pivotal Super 8 encounter of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup at R. Premadasa Stadium on Wednesday.

The fixture continued a long-standing T20I rivalry between the two nations. Out of 28 previous Twenty20 internationals, New Zealand have claimed 16 victories, while Sri Lanka have triumphed 11 times, with one match finishing without a result.

When it comes to T20 World Cup meetings, the margin is narrower. The sides have crossed paths six times in the tournament’s history, with Sri Lanka holding a slight edge through three wins compared to New Zealand’s two, while one contest ended abandoned.

Sri Lanka approached the must-win clash aiming to halt a slide that has seen them lose consecutive matches to Zimbabwe and England.

With hopes of advancing to the semifinals hanging in the balance, the Islanders required a decisive performance to keep their campaign alive.
