Pakistan Navy evacuates Sri Lankan national in critical condition 1,500km off the coast

Islamabad (Web Desk): On Saturday, the Pakistan Navy successfully carried out the medical evacuation of a Sri Lankan national from the high seas, located approximately 1,500 kilometers off the coast of Pakistan.

A statement issued by the Navy confirmed that PNS ships Tabuk and Moawin successfully evacuated the critically ill Sri Lankan crew member from the Indonesian-flagged merchant vessel MV Grey Palm, which was in urgent need of medical attention.

The operation was launched after a formal request from the Sri Lankan Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) for assistance in providing medical help to a Sri Lankan national who was in a critical condition onboard MV Grey Palm, situated 800 nautical miles (around 1,500 kilometers) from Pakistan's coast.

In response, the Pakistan Navy dispatched its ships as first responders and successfully evacuated the patient along with an attendant. The patient was immediately given the necessary medical treatment aboard the navy vessel.

The Sri Lankan authorities and the individual’s family expressed their gratitude towards Pakistan for its swift response and support during the operation.

“This successful medical evacuation is yet another testament to the operational readiness and longstanding commitment of Pakistan to ensure the safety of life at sea, regardless of nationality,” the statement said.

President Asif Ali Zardari also praised the Navy’s efforts, highlighting the successful operation which took place off the coast of Gwadar. According to a statement from the Presidency, President Zardari commended the professionalism and prompt response of the two naval vessels and their crews.

“Pakistan Navy has fulfilled its international responsibilities by transcending nationality to protect human life at sea,” President Zardari was quoted as saying.
