UN chief calls for ending crises in Gaza, Sudan and Ukraine

New York (Web Desk): United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres, in his address to the General Assembly, emphasized that the world body has played a central role in preserving global peace and continues to serve as an essential forum for dialogue and cooperation among nations.

He cautioned that the persistent support for impunity is undermining the very pillars of peace, warning that without reinforcing credible multilateral institutions, the world risks descending into disorder and instability.

Humanity, he said, now faces a defining choice between a future marked by chaos or one built on stability and peace, and the implementation of international law is more crucial than ever.

Underscoring that peace must remain the foremost priority, Guterres described it as the UN’s founding promise, yet regretted that wars are expanding mercilessly. Citing Ukraine as a stark example, he denounced crimes against humanity and ongoing human rights violations, urging an immediate and durable ceasefire.

Expressing deep concern over the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, he said the people there are being subjected to grave suffering. He called for an urgent cessation of hostilities, the release of hostages, and unimpeded access for humanitarian relief. Guterres warned that famine and the threat of genocide are placing humanity’s moral foundations in peril.

He reaffirmed the UN’s support for a two-state solution as the only viable path toward easing tensions and ensuring lasting peace in the Middle East.

The UN chief stressed the importance of safeguarding human rights defenders and journalists, noting that they must be able to carry out their responsibilities without fear or intimidation.
