Glacier burst in GB's Ghizer triggers floods, creates artificial lake

Gilgit (Web Desk): A powerful glacial lake outburst has triggered widespread flooding and destruction in the Ghizer district of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), officials confirmed on Friday.

The incident has also resulted in the formation of an artificial lake, raising serious concerns for communities living nearby.

According to Faizullah Firaq, the spokesperson for the Gilgit-Baltistan government, the glacier burst occurred in the Tali Das area of Gupis, leading to intense flooding and significant structural damage.

He stated that numerous villages had been flooded, causing substantial economic losses. However, he confirmed that no human lives were lost in the incident.

Local administration reported that landslides caused by the flooding have entirely obstructed the Gilgit–Shandur Road.

These landslides have taken place on both sides of the Tali Das stream, isolating the village of Raushan from adjacent areas.

The additional deputy commissioner of Ghizer noted that since around 3 am, a major landslide in Raushan had fully blocked the flow of the Ghizer River, worsening the overall impact of the disaster.

Officials credited early warnings for the successful evacuation of residents, which helped avoid any fatalities.

Gilgit-Baltistan’s Home Minister, Shams Lone, also confirmed that although the region has witnessed severe destruction, no deaths have occurred. He mentioned that some individuals had been trapped by the flooding, prompting an urgent appeal for aerial rescue support.

A helicopter from Force Command Northern Areas was deployed on an emergency basis to assist in rescue missions. So far, over 50 people have been safely evacuated, according to government spokesperson Faizullah Firaq.

He added that the outburst had blocked the river’s natural course, causing water to accumulate and form a massive lake, which now threatens neighboring settlements with the risk of further submergence. Firaq also mentioned that the Gilgit-Baltistan chief minister is closely monitoring the unfolding crisis.

Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a forecast predicting fresh spells of rain in various parts of the country starting Saturday.

The department expects rainfall, gusty winds, and thunderstorms to affect areas in Gilgit-Baltistan, including Ghizer, between August 23 and 27. Heavy showers are likely in districts such as Diamer, Astore, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, and Shigar.

The Met Office has also warned of potential landslides and mudslides, which could disrupt transportation routes in mountainous regions. Both local authorities and residents have been urged to stay vigilant and take precautionary measures.

This incident underscores the growing environmental dangers facing the region. The increasing frequency of glacial lake outburst floods highlights the urgent need for proactive measures to protect lives and property from the consequences of climate change and geological instability.
