PML-N's Hafiz Abdul Karim wins Senate seat from Punjab with 242 votes

Lahore (Web Desk): In the by-election for a vacant Senate seat from Punjab, Hafiz Abdul Karim of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) emerged victorious, securing his place in the upper house of Parliament. The position became available following the passing of Professor Sajid Mir.

Polling was held at the Punjab Assembly on Monday, commencing at 9:00am and continuing uninterrupted until 4:00pm

According to unofficial results, out of the 368 legislators eligible to vote, 345 participated in the process and 342 of those votes were declared valid, while three were rejected.

Four candidates contested the election, with Hafiz Abdul Karim receiving a total of 243 votes. His closest rival, Mehar Abdul Sattar—who was supported by the opposition, including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI)—secured 99 votes.

Given that the ruling PML-N and its allied groups collectively command 261 seats in the provincial assembly, compared to the opposition’s 108, the outcome was widely anticipated.

The electoral process concluded smoothly, with the expected majority enabling PML-N to retain control of the seat.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Monday extended his heartfelt congratulations and warm wishes to Hafiz Abdul Karim on his success in the Senate elections.

In a statement issued by the PM Office Media Wing, the prime minister expressed hope that Senator-elect Hafiz Abdul Karim would make a meaningful contribution towards upholding constitutional values and fostering national development.

He remarked that the election of senators marks an important step in the ongoing democratic process, underscoring its significance in maintaining institutional continuity.

PM Shehbaz also highlighted the vital responsibility senators carry in reinforcing the unity of the federation and promoting democratic principles throughout the legislative framework.
