Peshawar (Web Desk): Former bureaucrat Mohammad Azam Khan took oath as the caretaker chief minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) on Saturday.
KP Governor Haji Ghulam Ali administered the oath to Khan in a ceremony held in Peshawar today.
Khan’s name for the provincial caretaker role was finalised after consultation between outgoing chief minister Mahmood Khan and Leader of the Opposition Akram Khan Durrani.
As per the notification, the governor appointed Azam Khan as the caretaker chief minister in terms of Clause (IA) of the Article 224 of the Constitution of Islamic Republic of Pakistan 1973.
Meanwhile, speaking to newsmwen on Saturday, following his appointment as caretaker KP CM, Azam Khan said that cooperation would be extended to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to holding a free and fair electoral process in the province.
The caretaker chief minister said that he had also provided full cooperation to the ECP during his capacity as interior secretary.
He said that efforts would be made to further strengthen the security situation in the existing scenario, adding measures would be taken to control inflation through well-devised strategy and proper planning.
Azam Khan, who belongs to Charsadda, has previously served as K-P finance minister from October 24, 2007, to April 1, 2008. He also remained the secretary of the ministry of petroleum and natural resources in Islamabad and the chief secretary in K-P from September 1990 to July 1993.
Khan completed his education at the University of Peshawar and later obtained his Bar at Law degree from the Lincoln's Inn, London.
