Trump announces plans to retake Bagram airbase, raising tensions in the region

Washington  (Web Desk): U.S. President Donald Trump has announced plans to retake the Bagram Airbase in Afghanistan, escalating tensions in the region. Trump emphasized the strategic importance of Bagram Airbase due to its proximity to China and expressed America’s desire to regain control of the base.

The Taliban responded by stating that the Afghan people have never accepted foreign military presence throughout history, and the Doha Agreement also rejects such military presence. However, the Taliban added that they are willing to negotiate if the U.S. seeks dialogue.

According to the British news agency Reuters, U.S. officials described retaking Bagram as a large and complex operation that would require deploying thousands of troops, advanced defense systems, and significant financial resources. However, American officials clarified that no planning is currently underway.

Afghan leader Zakir Jalali praised President Trump’s efforts for dialogue and said that Afghanistan and the U.S. should foster relations based on mutual respect and shared interests, regardless of American military presence.

Bagram Airbase is Afghanistan’s largest airfield and served as a key U.S. military hub for two decades. The base also housed military facilities, fast-food restaurants, and commercial shops.

This announcement comes as the U.S. reviews its 2021 decision to withdraw from Afghanistan and contemplates the future of its presence in the region.
