DPM Dar calls Pakistan-Afghanistan ceasefire agreement in Doha a step in the right direction

Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan – Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar has welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between Pakistan and Afghanistan, which marks a significant de-escalation in the recent border hostilities between the two nations.

In a statement on X (formerly Twitter), Dar expressed his satisfaction with the deal, which was finalized late on Saturday night in Doha, Qatar. He described the agreement as a "positive first step" towards peace, while urging both sides to focus on ensuring its successful implementation.

"We look forward to the establishment of a concrete and verifiable monitoring mechanism in the upcoming meeting, which will be hosted by Turkey. It is essential to address the menace of terrorism emanating from Afghan soil and prevent any further loss of life," Dar said.

The recent clashes between Pakistan and Afghanistan were triggered by unprovoked attacks by Afghan Taliban forces and Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) militants. In response, Pakistan launched airstrikes and ground operations, resulting in the deaths of over 200 Afghan Taliban and TTP militants.

A temporary ceasefire, which Pakistan agreed to at Afghanistan’s request, brought an end to several days of intense fighting that claimed dozens of lives and left hundreds injured.

Dar also praised Qatar and Turkey for their mediation efforts, playing a pivotal role in bringing both sides to the negotiating table and facilitating the peace process.

The ceasefire agreement offers hope for a reduction in cross-border tensions and sets the stage for further diplomatic talks aimed at ensuring long-term peace and security in the region.
