Trump administration suspends US green card lottery, enforces stricter immigration measures enforced

Washington (Web Desk): At the directive of US President Donald Trump, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen has announced the suspension of the Diversity Visa Lottery (Green Card Lottery) program. This decision was made following recent shooting incidents at Brown University and MIT.

According to U.S. authorities, the suspect in the shooting was Claudio Neves Valente, a citizen of Portugal, who arrived in the U.S. in 2000 on a student visa and later obtained a Green Card in 2017. The police reported that the suspect died by suicide on Thursday evening.

Kirstjen Nielsen stated that the individual should never have been eligible to enter the U.S. and that the Diversity Visa Lottery program gave such individuals an opportunity to enter the country.

Under the Diversity Visa program, approximately 50,000 individuals are granted Green Cards through a lottery system each year, after undergoing a thorough background check and interview process. Critics argue that the current incident is being used to push for stricter immigration policies.
