PM Shehbaz signs historic 'Islamabad MoU' as mediator between US and Iran

Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday signed the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) as mediator formalinising a diplomatic breakthrough between Iran and the United States (US).

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), PM Shehbaz signed the Islamabad MoU as the mediator of the agreement.

The statement added that the document was also signed by US President Donald Trump and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, who represented their respective countries during the formal signing process.

Earlier, in a post on social media handle X, PM Shehbaz  announced that the historic ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’ has been electronically signed between the US and Iran, describing it as a significant step toward easing tensions between the two nations.

“I am honoured to announce that the historic ‘Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding’ has been electronically signed today between the United States of America and the Islamic Republic of Iran. The Memorandum has been signed by honourable Presidents of both the countries and also endorsed by me as the mediator,” he wrote.

PM Shehbaz said that the fact that the accord was signed at the highest level reflects the determination of both governments to settle their differences through dialogue and diplomacy.

He added that the agreement would become effective immediately. He explained that under the first phase of implementation, Iran would promptly reopen the Strait of Hormuz, while the United States would simultaneously end its naval blockade.

PM Shehbaz emphasized that Pakistan played a central role in helping bridge differences between the two sides. Through its diplomatic efforts, Islamabad facilitated engagement that ultimately paved the way for the agreement.

He extended warm congratulations and appreciation to US President Donald J. Trump, crediting his consistent support for diplomatic solutions and peaceful negotiations.

The prime minister noted that Trump’s approach had helped prevent a confrontation that could have produced serious repercussions for the region and beyond.

PM Shehbaz also praised members of the American negotiating team, including J.D. Vance, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, acknowledging their dedication and contribution to the successful outcome.
PM Shehbaz expressed profound respect and appreciation to Supreme Leader of Iran Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, commending their leadership and commitment to peace.

He also acknowledged the efforts of Iran’s negotiating delegation, including Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Abbas Araghchi and Eskandar Momeni, whose patience and constructive engagement helped bring the process to a successful conclusion.

PM Shehbaz also highly commended the leadership of Qatar for its assistance in advancing the talks.
He also highly commend the leadership of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Republic of Turkiye and the Arab Republic of Egypt for their indispensable role and invaluable contributions in this regard.  

The premier also made special mention of Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, whose tireless efforts, selfless dedication and instrumental role were critical in facilitating this breakthrough and advancing the cause of peace and regional stability.

Expressing optimism about the future, PM Shehbaz said he hoped the memorandum would lay the groundwork for stronger cooperation, deeper mutual understanding and long-term prosperity across the region.

Meanwhile, Iran’s state-run news agency IRNA reported that President Masoud Pezeshkian and US President Donald Trump formally signed the memorandum during the early hours of Thursday.

The agency also shared an image on X showing President Pezeshkian signing the document before presenting it to the camera. The memorandum displayed in the photograph already bore the signature of President Donald Trump.
