Islamabad (Web Desk): In a united call for environmental action, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif have underscored the urgent need for a collective response to the escalating challenges posed by climate change.
Their remarks came as Pakistan kicked off a nationwide Monsoon Tree Plantation Drive, under which more than 41 million saplings are set to be planted across the country.
Addressing the nation through separate messages on the occasion, the president and the premier emphasized the importance of the Green Pakistan Programme as a strategic national effort to restore ecological balance and promote sustainable development.
President Zardari noted that the country is already grappling with the consequences of climate change, pointing to the recent devastation caused by floods and cloudbursts in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and other regions.
He urged citizens to act decisively by planting more trees, which he described as essential to reversing environmental damage.
The President highlighted the Green Pakistan Programme as a vital initiative aimed at expanding forest areas, rehabilitating degraded land, and encouraging nature-based solutions.
He stressed that the future well-being and prosperity of the nation are deeply rooted in the conservation of forests and the natural environment.
In his message, PM Shehbaz reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to the tree plantation campaign.
“All available resources and nature-based solutions would be employed to increase forest cover and enhance soil fertility,” the premier note.
The prime minister appealed to the public to embrace their responsibility in this national cause, describing it as not only an environmental obligation but a climate duty of great importance.
He added that tree planting carries far-reaching benefits for human life and plays a crucial role in preserving the country’s natural assets, including its biodiversity and ecosystems.
