US journal backs Pakistan's stance on IWT, warns India's water politics could heighten tensions in South Asia

Washington (Web Desk): A leading American publication has expressed strong backing for Pakistan’s concerns over India’s recent interference with the Indus Waters Treaty, cautioning that such moves could trigger a severe humanitarian crisis in South Asia.

The National Interest highlighted that India’s decision to suspend the treaty has opened a new chapter in regional water disputes, potentially heightening tensions and creating instability across the subcontinent.

The report identified India’s “Dulhasti Stage-II” project as a direct challenge to the treaty, describing it as an effort to convert water resources into a strategic tool. The journal warned that this could escalate into a serious water shortage, endangering millions of lives in the region

The publication also condemned India’s refusal to share essential water-related data, pointing out that such actions violate international legal standards. It reminded readers that the International Court of Justice has clearly stated that India cannot unilaterally suspend the Indus Waters Treaty.

According to the report, the treaty remains a critical safeguard for water security in South Asia. It stressed that India has a legal responsibility to maintain the flow of water from the western rivers to Pakistan and strongly criticized any attempt to use water as a weapon, calling it a clear violation of international law and judicial directives.
