Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus announces resignation as country prepares for new govt

Dhaka (Web Desk): Bangladesh’s interim chief Muhammad Yunus has stepped down from his position, marking the end of the transitional administration he led.

In a televised address to the nation, Yunus announced that the caretaker government had completed its mandate and that the path had now been cleared for the formation of a newly elected government.

He expressed hope that the country’s democratic momentum, freedom of expression and protection of fundamental rights would continue uninterrupted under the incoming leadership.

Congratulating the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on its electoral victory, Yunus extended his best wishes to party chief Tarique Rahman.

He said the high level of participation by voters and political parties in the general elections had set a commendable example, strengthening the democratic process and reinforcing public confidence in the country’s political system.

Reflecting on the 18-month tenure of the interim administration, Yunus noted that he had assumed leadership of the transitional period in 2024 following the end of Sheikh Hasina’s government.

The caretaker setup was tasked with steering the country through a sensitive political phase and preparing the ground for credible elections.

In last week’s polls, the BNP secured a two-thirds majority in parliament, paving the way for the new government to formally take office in the coming days.
