Srinagar (Web Desk): National Conference leader Omar Abdullah took oath of office as the Chief Minister of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) on Wednesday in a ceremony held in Srinagar.
His election comes after a decisive victory in the recent assembly elections, marking the first time in ten years that the region has an elected chief minister.
Abdullah's party secured 42 seats in the 90-member assembly, gaining support from four independent candidates and one legislator from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
The ceremony took place at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Conference Centre, attended by notable political figures, including opposition leaders Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi.
This event is historically significant as it represents the first elected government since the abrogation of Article 370, which previously granted special status to the region.
Abdullah is now serving his second term as CM, having previously held the office until 2009.
His family has deep roots in regional politics AS his father, Farooq Abdullah, served as chief minister thrice, while his grandfather, Sheikh Mohammad Abdullah, was the first prime minister of IIOJK.
