Rahim Yar Khan: At least 5 women killed, several injured in roof collapse during BISP payment distribution

Rahim Yar Khan (Web Desk): A catastrophic roof collapse in Chak 125, Rahim Yar Khan left at least five women dead and dozens injured as residents gathered to receive their Benazir Income Support Program (BISP) payments.

According to sources the building, which was structurally weak, could not withstand the weight of the crowd and the payment devices placed on the roof.

A spokesperson for the district administration said that more than 200 people were on the first floor of a shop when the incident occurred.

Deputy Commissioner Zaheer Anwar Jappa and DPO Irfan Samo rushed to Sheikh Zayed Hospital, where an emergency had been declared and medical teams were immediately mobilized. Dr Saleem Leghari, Principal of Sheikh Medical College, also joined the hospital’s response efforts.

Officials have cautioned that the death toll may rise as rescue and treatment operations are still underway.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the hazardous building conditions and the circumstances that led to the collapse.
