Monsoon Havoc: At least 8 dead, several injured in rain-related incidents in Lahore

Lahore (Web Desk): Monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in Lahore and its surrounding areas, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.

At least eight people lost their lives in separate incidents of roof collapses triggered by the relentless downpour, which continued intermittently throughout the night.

The torrential rains caused major waterlogging on Lahore’s roads, submerging several low-lying neighborhoods and disrupting daily life.

According to the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), the heaviest rainfall in Lahore was recorded in Pani Wala Talab at 171 mm, followed by Iqbal Town with 169 mm, Tajpura with 167 mm, Mughalpura with 135 mm, and Lakshmi Chowk with 133 mm. The intensity and volume of the rain overwhelmed the city’s drainage systems, further exacerbating the urban flooding.

Islamabad and Rawalpindi also experienced heavy rainfall, leading to water accumulation in low-lying areas. Several other cities in Punjab, including Daska, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Sangla Hill, Gujranwala, Faisalabad, and Kasur, were similarly affected, with entire neighborhoods turning into makeshift lakes.

Across Punjab, the monsoon rains and accompanying windstorms have resulted in multiple accidents, claiming the lives of 24 people and injuring 92 others.

In the village of Mureedwal near Lahore’s Thokar Niaz Baig, five members of the same family were killed when the roof of their house collapsed.

Among the injured were 30-year-old Faisal and a five-year-old girl named Bubbli. In another tragic incident in Raiwind’s Mission Colony, three people died due to a similar roof collapse, while in Harbanspura, two children lost their lives after being electrocuted during the rainfall.

In Faisalabad’s Rachna Town, a couple perished when their house roof gave way, though their three children miraculously survived.

The Meteorological Department has forecast continued heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours across various districts of Punjab, warning that this monsoon spell may persist until July 17.

Meanwhile, the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued alerts for potential rain-induced landslides and flash floods in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, urging citizens and local administrations to remain vigilant.
