World Youth Skills Day being observed today

Islamabad (Web Desk): World Youth Skills Day is being observed today (Wednesday) across the globe, including Pakistan with renewed emphasis on preparing young people with the knowledge and practical abilities required to succeed in an increasingly interconnected and fast-changing world.

Marked under the theme "Skills for a Shared Future," this year's global campaign draws attention to the pressing need for forward-looking youth development programmes that can equip the next generation for emerging social, economic and technological challenges.

The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) proclaimed July 15 as World Youth Skills Day in 2014 to underline the importance of providing young people with technical, vocational and future-oriented skills that enhance employment opportunities, support decent work and encourage entrepreneurship.

In his message marking World Youth Skills Day, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called on the people of Pakistan to renew their collective commitment to shaping a future in which the country's young generation can fully utilise its talent and abilities for long-term national development and prosperity.

The prime minister described Pakistan’s youth as one of the nation’s greatest strengths and most valuable resources.

PM Shehbaz said that by receiving quality education, developing strong moral values, and mastering modern knowledge and professional skills, young people are steadily moving towards a brighter, more successful, and prosperous future.

The prime minister further said that the government is broadening cooperation with industrial partners and international institutions under a comprehensive plan aimed at preparing Pakistan’s workforce to meet global benchmarks and remain competitive in the international job market.

For 2026, the observance centres on strengthening a broad mix of technical and digital expertise alongside social, emotional and civic capabilities.

The theme recognises that these combined skills are essential for helping young people adapt to rapid technological progress while contributing to the transition toward environmentally sustainable economies.

Activities taking place on this year's World Youth Skills Day highlight the urgent need for innovative training initiatives that not only enable young people to adjust to changing circumstances but also inspire them to become compassionate leaders, foster understanding across cultures, strengthen resilience and play an active role in creating a more inclusive and sustainable future.

The annual observance also provides an opportunity for governments, educational institutions, employers and development partners to work together in improving education and vocational training systems.

These efforts aim to ensure every young person has access to the skills needed to secure meaningful employment, achieve personal aspirations, strengthen their communities and contribute to sustainable development.
