Smart meter prices reduced by up to 40%, says Awais Leghari

Islamabad (Web Desk): Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari on Monday revealed a major reduction in the cost of smart meters for power distribution companies, projecting annual savings of around Rs150 billion.

The announcement came after a report on smart meters was presented, highlighting the impact of transparent and internationally competitive procurement practices.

According to the minister, the price of a three-phase smart meter has dropped sharply from nearly Rs45,000 to less than Rs25,000, bringing it close to the cost of a traditional three-phase meter.

The cost of a single-phase smart meter has also been cut by Rs7,000. These figures do not include applicable taxes.

Sardar Awais emphasized that smart meters will offer numerous advantages, including eliminating inaccurate readings, enabling faster detection of electricity theft, and allowing prepaid billing.

Consumers will gain direct access to their energy usage data, and power restoration will become quicker without the need for a lineman.

He added that these meters will provide several other benefits that will improve efficiency and transparency in power distribution.
