Islamabad (Web Desk): World Diabetes Day is being observed today (Friday), across the globe including Pakistan, drawing attention to the growing global burden of diabetes and the need for stronger action to address it.
This year’s World Health Organization theme, “Diabetes across life stages,” underscores that people living with the condition at any age should have access to integrated healthcare, supportive surroundings, and policies that safeguard dignity, promote well-being, and empower individuals to manage their illness effectively.
The campaign highlights the importance of viewing diabetes through a life-course perspective, ensuring prevention, treatment, and long-term care are strengthened at every stage.
Diabetes remains one of the fastest-rising health threats, now affecting more than 800 million people worldwide. It is a major cause of heart complications, kidney failure, vision loss, and amputations, with its impact felt across families, communities, and healthcare systems.
The rise in cases has been particularly sharp in low- and middle-income nations, where access to essential medicines and quality care is often limited.
This year’s global message calls for urgent steps to ensure that individuals—from children and adolescents to adults and the elderly—are not left behind in efforts to prevent, diagnose, and manage the disease.
World Diabetes Day was launched in 1991 by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in response to worsening global trends.
In 2006, the United Nations (UN) formally recognized the observance through a dedicated resolution, reinforcing its significance as a global public health priority.
