Washington (Web Desk): President-elect Donald J. Trump unveiled a new plan on Tuesday, announcing that he has tapped Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, SpaceX, and X, to spearhead a sweeping government efficiency drive.
Musk will work alongside former Republican presidential contender Vivek Ramaswamy in a newly formed advisory body, the Department of Government Efficiency—a non-traditional team aimed at dismantling bureaucratic hurdles and revamping federal agencies.
This move positions Musk, the world's wealthiest individual, at the centre of a major policy shift under Trump’s leadership.
Musk, a key supporter of Trump’s 2024 bid, has contributed both financially and publicly, championing the candidate’s vision. Trump praised Musk’s leadership, calling him a “true innovator” who is “uniquely qualified” to tackle the inefficiencies plaguing the U.S. government.
“The partnership between Elon and Vivek will transform how our government operates,” Trump declared. “Together, they will slash excessive regulations, eliminate waste, and bring an entrepreneurial spirit to Washington that has never been seen before.”
Unlike traditional cabinet roles, the new department will operate in an advisory capacity and will not require Senate confirmation. This arrangement allows Musk to maintain his roles at Tesla and SpaceX, with no interruption to his leadership at the helm of his private ventures.
The department will collaborate closely with the White House and the Office of Management and Budget to push through comprehensive reforms.
Musk has long been a vocal advocate for deregulation, especially in sectors like space exploration and autonomous technology. His experiences with government oversight in those fields are expected to inform his approach as he works to streamline federal functions.
Despite their shared support for deregulation, Musk and Trump have diverging views on climate policy. Musk advocates for clean energy and carbon reduction, promoting the growth of electric vehicles, while Trump has consistently criticized climate initiatives and pushed back against California’s green energy policies.
Nonetheless, Musk has remained a steadfast ally of Trump, going so far as to say that Trump “must win” in order to protect the integrity of the Constitution.
Throughout the 2024 campaign, Musk has become a key figure, making high-profile appearances at rallies and contributing significant funding to pro-Trump causes.
As Trump embarks on this overhaul, the new Department of Government Efficiency will be tasked with implementing “large-scale structural changes” to streamline the operation of federal agencies, reduce waste, and encourage a more business-oriented approach to governance.
