Balochistan's Khuzdar hit by 5.6‑magnitude earthquake, tremors felt in parts of Sindh

Quetta (Web Desk): A strong earthquake measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale was felt in Balochistan, originating 86 kilometres northeast of Khuzdar.

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) confirmed the earthquake, which caused concern among residents in the surrounding areas.

The tremors were widely felt across various districts of Sindh and Balochistan, the PMD’s Seismic Monitoring Centre said.

The sequence began with a milder shake registering 3.8 on the Richter scale, which was soon followed by a more powerful jolt initially recorded at 5.8.

People in Sukkur, Jacobabad, Khuzdar, Jhal Magsi, Dadu, Naseerabad, and nearby areas reported feeling the quakes.

In Khuzdar, the first tremor struck at 10:52am, measuring 3.8, and a stronger one hit at 11:30am, reaching 5.6 on the Richter scale.

Authorities said the earthquake occurred at a depth of 33 kilometres, placing the epicentre 75 kilometres southeast of Khuzdar.

International reports, citing the United States Geological Survey (USGS), recorded a slightly lower magnitude of 5.5.

According to the USGS, the quake was centred about 79 kilometres from Khuzdar and originated 10 kilometres below the surface.

This sequence of tremors left communities across the region shaken but officials have not yet reported major damage or casualties.
