Pakistan, UK discuss student visa delays and educational cooperation

Islamabad (Web Desk): Federal Minister for Law and Justice Azam Nazeer Tarar held a meeting with British High Commissioner to Pakistan Jane Marriott in Islamabad, during which the two sides discussed issues concerning bilateral relations, educational cooperation and matters of mutual interest.

A key issue raised during the meeting was the delay in the issuance of British visas for Pakistani students. Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar expressed concern over the difficulties being faced by a large number of Pakistani students who are awaiting their visas to begin or continue their studies in the United Kingdom.

The federal minister said visa delays were causing considerable anxiety among students and their families, with hundreds of Pakistani students at risk of missing the start of their academic programmes.

He stressed the need to remove unnecessary obstacles that could prevent Pakistani students from benefiting from educational opportunities in the UK.

Tarar highlighted the importance of facilitating genuine Pakistani students who have secured admission to British educational institutions, noting that timely visa processing is essential for them to join their universities and colleges according to their scheduled academic calendars.

The meeting also covered broader aspects of Pakistan-United Kingdom relations, with both sides expressing interest in further expanding cooperation in areas of mutual importance.

British High Commissioner Jane Marriott assured the federal minister that the issue concerning delays in Pakistani students’ visa applications would be addressed.

The assurance came amid concerns that prolonged processing could disrupt students’ educational plans and result in the loss of an academic year for some applicants.

The two sides also agreed on the importance of strengthening educational and institutional linkages between Pakistan and the United Kingdom.

They emphasised continued engagement and cooperation to create greater opportunities for students and promote stronger institutional ties between the two countries.

The meeting underscored the significance both Pakistan and the UK attach to educational exchanges and people-to-people contacts as part of their broader bilateral relationship.
