Rights groups warn of abuses by Afghan Taliban regime in guise of anti-poppy campaign

Kabul (Web Desk): A fresh wave of repression by the Taliban administration has reportedly emerged in Afghanistan, as authorities intensify actions against civilians under the pretext of eliminating poppy cultivation.

The crackdown has further reinforced perceptions among many Afghans that the Taliban regime is acting against its own people through the excessive use of force.

According to local sources, Taliban authorities have allegedly targeted ordinary citizens during operations aimed at destroying poppy fields, with reports indicating that several people have been killed in the process.

Residents have also accused the administration of using coercive tactics to seize private property and valuable resources, creating widespread fear and unrest among local communities.

The dispute over control of resources has reportedly escalated into armed confrontations in several parts of the country.

Violent clashes are said to be continuing between Taliban fighters and local residents, many of whom have taken up resistance in an effort to protect their rights and properties.

Human rights organisations have warned that the Taliban regime is engaging in what they described as “state terrorism” against its own population, while continuing to violate the basic rights and freedoms of Afghan citizens.
