UN chief lauds Pakistan's peace efforts during meeting with Mohsin Naqvi

New York (Web Desk): Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres at the UN Headquarters in New York and exchanged views on regional situation and key international issues.

During the meeting, the UN chief praised Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts to promote global peace.
Naqvi is representing Pakistan at the two-day United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit 2026, taking place at the UN headquarters on July 7 and 8.

The international forum has gathered interior ministers, police chiefs and senior UN officials from across the world to discuss ways of strengthening UN policing in response to emerging peace and security challenges, while enhancing global cooperation against transnational crime.

Alongside the summit, the interior minister has also been holding a series of bilateral meetings with senior representatives from various countries.

According to a post shared by state-run PTV on X, Naqvi and Guterres exchanged views on Pakistan’s role in mediation efforts as well as its longstanding contribution to maintaining international peace. The UN chief acknowledged and appreciated Pakistan’s continued commitment to advancing peace, the statement added.

Earlier, Naqvi met Russian Interior Minister Vladimir Alexandrovich Kolokoltsev at the UN headquarters, where both sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening ties between Pakistan and Russia while reviewing the regional security situation and prospects for greater cooperation between their respective interior ministries.

A statement issued by Pakistan’s Interior Ministry on X said the discussions focused on expanding collaboration in counterterrorism, anti-narcotics operations, cybercrime prevention and joint police training initiatives.

The two ministers also explored a coordinated approach to dismantling terrorist networks operating across the region, particularly those based in Afghanistan. They agreed to move forward with signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between their interior ministries to broaden bilateral cooperation, the statement said.

During the meeting, Naqvi extended an invitation to Kolokoltsev to visit Pakistan.

The two sides also reviewed the progress made on decisions reached during their previous meeting.

Speaking about the regional security landscape, Naqvi said that more than 25 terrorist organisations were currently active in Afghanistan. He stressed that eliminating these extremist groups was a shared international responsibility and called for closer cooperation to eradicate the threat.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the UN engagements in New York.

A day earlier, Naqvi also held separate meetings with China’s Minister of State for Public Security and head of the Special Service Bureau, Ling Zhifeng, and Sri Lankan Interior Minister Ananda Wijepala.
