T20 World Cup: Scotland beat Italy by 73 runs 

Kolkata (Web Desk): Scotland recorded their first triumph at the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 on Monday, overpowering Italy by 73 runs at Eden Gardens. Batting first, Scotland posted a challenging total of 208, setting the tone for the match with a strong start from their openers.

George Munsey and Michael Jones laid the foundation, reaching 50 runs within seven overs.

Munsey was in spectacular form, crafting his 14th T20I fifty with 84 runs off 54 balls, including 13 boundaries and two sixes, before Grant Stewart ended his impressive 126-run stand. Jones added a valuable 37 from 30 deliveries, featuring a four and two sixes, keeping Italy on the back foot.

The middle order continued Scotland’s momentum as Brandon McMullen and Richie Berrington pushed the score past 150. Their 48-run partnership was broken when Ali Hasan claimed Berrington’s wicket for 15 off 11 balls, which included two fours. In the closing overs, Tom Bruce was dismissed for a single run by Thomas Draca, while McMullen remained unbeaten on 41 off 18 balls, smashing four sixes.

Michael Leask added a rapid cameo of 22 runs from five deliveries, including two fours and two sixes, helping Scotland reach a formidable 207-6.

Italy’s reply faltered under pressure, as they were bundled out for 134 in 16.4 overs. Ben Manenti top-scored with a fighting 52 off 31 balls, hitting five boundaries and one six.

Harry Manenti contributed 37 runs from 25 balls, including three sixes and a four, while JJ Smuts added 22 off 11 deliveries with two sixes and two fours. Anthony Mosca made 11, but the rest of the lineup struggled to counter Scotland’s disciplined bowling.

Captain Wayne Madsen did not get a chance to bat after being forced to leave the match midway due to a shoulder injury.

Michael Leask led the Scottish bowling effort with a brilliant 4 for 17 in four overs.

Mark Watt supported with two wickets, while Brad Currie, Brad Wheal, and Oliver Davidson each claimed one wicket. Scotland’s bowlers maintained control throughout, ensuring that Italy never came close to the target and securing a convincing 73-run victory.
