PM Shehbaz calls of comprehensive action plan to boost agri production

Islamabad (Web Desk): Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed the relevant authorities to present a comprehensive action plan aimed at boosting agricultural production and implementing wide-ranging reforms in the sector.

He was chairing a review meeting on the performance of the agriculture sector and the progress of ongoing reforms.

During the meeting, the prime minister emphasized that improving agricultural productivity, promoting value addition, and increasing the export of agricultural products were among the government’s top priorities.

He instructed that both short- and long-term action plans be developed, focusing on the use of modern agricultural machinery, availability of quality seeds, geographical planning of crops, and provision of easy loans to farmers.

To improve per-acre crop yield, the prime minister directed that agricultural research centers be made more effective. He also stressed the importance of fostering public-private partnerships in these centers to ensure cutting-edge research.

He called for the involvement of internationally renowned experts to guide the effective use of artificial intelligence and modern technology in agriculture.

PM Shehbaz also ordered the formulation of a concrete action plan for the development of small and medium-sized agro-industries, enabling value addition and enhancing the country’s capacity to produce export-ready agricultural goods.

He reiterated that to make Pakistan self-sufficient in food production and encourage the cultivation of profitable crops, farmers must be provided with all necessary support and guidance.

The premier underscored the importance of consulting farmers and other stakeholders in the policymaking process to ensure inclusive and practical solutions. The prime minister highlighted the need for strong coordination and cooperation with provincial governments to achieve sustainable agricultural development.

Recognizing the growing threat of climate change, he directed that farmers be assisted in adopting climate-resistant seeds and modern farming techniques.

He pointed out the importance of preparing a comprehensive cotton cultivation plan for new suitable areas, particularly in Sindh and Balochistan, based on changing rainfall patterns and climatic shifts.

The prime minister also called for focused research and planning to incorporate biofuels into the country’s energy mix.

During the meeting, participants were briefed on the production outcomes of major Rabi and Kharif crops from the previous year, the challenges faced by farmers, and a proposed roadmap for future improvement.

The session also covered updates on the implementation of current government reforms and the impact of climate change on the agriculture sector.

Concluding the meeting, the prime minister instructed that a comprehensive action plan for further agricultural reforms be presented soon. Federal Minister for National Food Security Rana Tanveer Hussain, agricultural experts, and senior officials attended the session.
