Beijing (Web Desk/Agencies): China has firmly warned that it will take strong retaliatory measures to protect its interests if the United States follows through with plans to impose additional tariffs on Chinese imports.
A spokesperson from China’s Ministry of Commerce expressed strong opposition to the US proposal, which includes a potential 50% tariff increase, labeling it as an unjustified and unreasonable move.
The spokesperson condemned the notion of "reciprocal tariffs," stating that it is a baseless justification for actions that amount to economic bullying, which China will not accept.
The Chinese official stressed that any counteractions the country takes will be fully legitimate and designed to safeguard its sovereignty, security, and economic interests, as well as to preserve a fair and orderly international trade environment.
He criticized the US for escalating its stance, describing the threatened tariffs as an additional mistake that exposes the United States’ tactics of economic coercion, which China views as unacceptable.
"China will fight till the end if the US side is bent on going down the wrong path," the spokesperson noted.
He reiterated that trade wars offer no benefits for any party involved and argued that protectionist policies only lead to negative outcomes.
The spokesperson also warned that using threats and pressure as diplomatic tools is an ineffective and inappropriate approach in dealing with China.
China urged the US to reconsider its actions, retract its unilateral tariffs, and seek to resolve their differences through respectful and balanced negotiations.
The spokesperson further said that China continues to advocate for dialogue based on mutual respect, believing that a resolution to trade issues should be pursued through fair discussions, not through intimidation or economic punishment.
