Police arrest SIC chief Sahibzada Hamid Raza in case related to May 9 riots 

Faisalabad (Web Desk): Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza was arrested by Islamabad police on Friday morning and handed over to Faisalabad police.

The Faisalabad police produced the SIC chief before the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Faisalabad, which ordered his transfer to jail under police security.

According to reports, Hamid Raza was arrested while traveling from Peshawar to Faisalabad and was detained en route by Islamabad police.

His arrest was later confirmed by the acting chairman of the Sunni Ittehad Council, Sahibzada Hasan Raza.

According to court documents, the Faisalabad ATC had sentenced Hamid Raza to ten years in prison in connection with the events of May 9, 2025.

The verdict, announced on July 31, 2025, pertained to cases involving an attack on a sensitive institution and unrest registered at the Ghulam Muhammadabad Police Station, in which a total of 108 individuals received various sentences.

Among those convicted were prominent Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Omar Ayub, Shibli Faraz, and Zartaj Gul, while others such as Fawad Chaudhry and Zain Qureshi were acquitted.

It is pertinent to mention that Sahibzada Hamid Raza had resigned in September this year from his position as Secretary of Information of the Tehreek Tahafuz Aain-e-Pakistan, citing personal reasons.
