Islamabad (Web Desk): Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Saturday withdrew a contempt petition against the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) regarding delay in conducting local bodies elections in the federal capital despite Islamabad High Court's (IHC) order.
According to details, The IHC Registrar's Office questioned how a contempt of court reference could be filed against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC).
On December 31, 2022, PTI leader Ali Nawaz Awan filed the petition, praying the court to initiate contempt proceedings against the ECP over its failure to conduct the local government polls.
He submitted that voters had gathered outside polling stations in the federal capital but the election staff was missing.
A contempt of court petition was then filed against the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja and members of the electoral watchdog.
In December, the IHC ordered the ECP to conduct local government elections in Islamabad as per schedule, asking the federal government to assist the electoral body with the polls.
