Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Turkiye sign 'Makkah Joint Defence Agreement'

Makkah (Web Desk): Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye on Friday entered into the “Makkah Joint Defence Agreement”, a landmark pact intending to strengthen collective deterrence against any act of aggression, the Foreign Office (FO) said.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Turkiye’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan signed the agreement, underscoring the three countries’ determination to deepen cooperation on security matters.

The FO said that the agreement “reflects the three states’ shared commitment to further strengthening their collective security and to promoting peace, security, and stability in the region and beyond, in pursuit of a secure and prosperous future”.

The statement added that the agreement stipulates that any armed attack against any one of the three States shall be regarded as an attack against them all. It further provides for the enhancement of all aspects of defence cooperation among the three States.

“At the gracious invitation of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif paid a visit to Saudi Arabia today,” the FO said.

Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud received the President of Türkiye and the Prime Minister of Pakistan, at Al-Safa Palace in Makkah, where the Makkah Al-Mukarramah Summit for Joint Defence was held.

During the summit, the distinguished relations between Saudi Arabia, Türkiye and Pakistan were reviewed, along with a number of issues of mutual interest.

“Guided by the longstanding historical ties among the three States, based on the enduring bonds of brotherhood and Islamic solidarity that unite them, and building upon their shared strategic interests and longstanding defence cooperation, the three leaders signed the Makkah Joint Defence Agreement,” the FO said.

Earlier on Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif held a meeting with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at Al-Safa Palace, with Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir accompanying him, the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said.

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar and Defence Minister Khawaja Asif also attended the meeting.

The FO had earlier said that the talks would “focus on consolidating the Pakistan-Saudi bilateral relations as well as exchange of views on regional and international developments of mutual interests”.

The FO had said that the visit, taking place at a time of increased tensions in the Gulf, held “significance beyond the immediate crises and short-term considerations”.

It had further stated that the engagement would “further strengthen bilateral relations, deepen strategic cooperation, enhance coordination on regional and international issues of mutual interest, and reinforce multilateral cooperation”.

Highlighting the longstanding ties between the two countries, the FO had said, “The visit marks Pakistan’s long-standing partnership with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia anchored in decades of mutual trust, cooperation and brotherhood.”

On Friday morning, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with his high-level delegation, performed Umrah.

The premier was accompanied by his delegation including Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, COAS and CDF Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, federal ministers Khawaja Muhammad Asif and Attaullah Tarar, and PM's Special Assistant to PM Tariq Fatemi.

The door of Khana Kaaba was opened specially for the prime minister and his delegation.

Following the completion of the Umrah rituals, the prime minister, field marshal, and other members of the Pakistani delegation offered special prayers for the progress and prosperity of the country, the safety and unity of the Muslim Ummah, and for regional and global peace.

PM Shehbaz arrived in Jeddah on Thursday evening for a three-day visit to Saudi Arabia at the invitation of Saudi Crown Prince and Prime Minister Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

He was received by Makkah’s Deputy Governor Prince Saud bin Mishal bin Abdulaziz.
